Self Assessment & MTD for Income Tax

Self Assessment is changing. From April 2026, sole traders and landlords with qualifying income over £50,000 must move to MTD for Income Tax — quarterly digital updates and a final declaration in place of the traditional annual return. The threshold drops to £30,000 from April 2027, and to £20,000 from April 2028, bringing in many more taxpayers over the next two years.

Burton Varley takes the guesswork out of this transition. We’ll work out which phase applies to you based on your turnover, get your digital records in order well before your start date, and manage your quarterly submissions so nothing is missed. If you’re not yet mandated, we can also advise on whether signing up voluntarily makes sense for you.

Our service includes:

  • Confirming your mandation date based on your qualifying income
  • Digital record-keeping setup using HMRC-compatible software
  • Quarterly update submissions throughout the tax year
  • End-of-year final declaration, replacing your old Self Assessment return

Don’t wait for the deadline to catch you out — talk to us now and we’ll have you ready in plenty of time.
